Indoor vs Outdoor Padel Courts: What’s Right for Your Australian Venue?

The indoor vs outdoor decision is one of the most important — and budget-defining — choices you’ll make when building a padel court in Australia. Both have strong commercial cases. The right answer depends on your climate, budget, site and long-term venue strategy.
Outdoor Courts: The Australian Default
The majority of padel courts built in Australia are outdoor, and for good reason. Australia’s climate — especially in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide — offers more outdoor playing days per year than almost any other padel market in the world. Outdoor courts carry a significantly lower capital cost, faster build programme and simpler planning pathway than indoor facilities.
The main limitation is weather-dependent utilisation. In Melbourne, Brisbane and coastal markets with summer storm seasons, an uncovered outdoor court can lose 20–40% of peak revenue hours to weather. This is where the canopy option becomes compelling.

Outdoor + Canopy: The Sweet Spot for Most Australian Venues
A canopy-covered outdoor court delivers most of the revenue benefits of an indoor court at a fraction of the cost. Courts remain ventilated and feel open while being protected from rain, direct sun and wind. PCC designs and builds canopy structures in-house — one of only two padel builders in Australia with this capability — and can integrate them as part of the original court build or add them to existing courts.
For Melbourne and Brisbane venues in particular, we recommend a canopy from the outset. The additional AUD $35,000–60,000 investment is typically recovered within 12–18 months through increased bookings.
Indoor Courts: The Premium Option
Full indoor courts offer complete weather independence, more control over the playing environment, and the ability to operate year-round at consistent utilisation levels. They’re also the format used for FIP and WPT competition, which matters if you’re planning to host tournaments.
The trade-off is cost and planning complexity. A full indoor court starts from AUD $130,000 per court, and the building shell itself — if you’re constructing a dedicated facility rather than installing in an existing building — adds significant additional capital cost. Planning approval for a new indoor sporting building is substantially more complex than for an outdoor court.

- Brisbane: Outdoor+canopy. Subtropical storms and UV make canopy coverage essential for year-round operation.
- Perth: Outdoor sufficient for most venues. 3,000+ sunshine hours but summer heat argues for shading via canopy.
- Competition venues / premium clubs: Indoor courts justify the premium for tournament hosting and premium membership positioning.
